Jon: WELCOME BACK. MY GUESTTONIGHT. A JOURNALIST, THE HOST

OF "KATIE" HER NEW DOCUMENTARYFILM FOR WHICH SHE SERVES AS

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND NARRATORIS CALLED "FED UP."

>> THIS IS THE FIRST GENERATIONOF AMERICAN CHILDREN EXPECTED TO

LEAD SHORTER LIVES THAN THEIRPARENTS.

>> I AM 12 YEARS OLD, AND MYDOCTORS HAVE SAID THAT I AM A

STATISTIC.

>> WE'RE BLAMING WILL POWER, ANDIT'S A CRIME.

THE GOVERNMENT IS SUBDZIDIZINGTHE OBESITY EPIDEMIC.

>> THEY PLACE PRIVATE PROFITAHEAD OF PUBLIC HEALTH.

SYSTEMATIC POLITICAL FAILURE.

>> BY 2050, ONE OUT OF EVERYTHREE AMERICANS WILL HAVE

DIABETES.

>> THOSE DISEASES ARE BEINGDRIVEN BY SUGAR.

>> THIS IS A FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMNOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IN

SOCIETY.

>> WE COULD CURE 80% OF THEPROBLEM WHERE THEY PREPARE THE

FOOD IN THE SCHOOLS. YOU HAVE TOCHANGE THE DIET OF AMERICA.

>> IT'S ALL PREVENTABLE.

>> Jon: IT'S A HORRORMOVIE.

PLEASE WELCOME BACK TO THEPROGRAM, KATIE COURIC!

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )>> I WAS GOING TO SAY GIVE ME

SOME SUGAR AND THEN I THOUGHTBETTER OF IT.

>> Jon: I SEE WHAT YOU DIDTHERE. HI, KATIE COURIC.

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ).

>> HI, JON. HOW ARE YOU.

>> Jon: THIS DOCUMENTARY ISWILDLY DISTURBING.

>> YES, IT IS.

>> Jon: AND IS PACKED WITHFACTS THAT I THINK PEOPLE MIGHT

BE INCREDIBLY UNAWARE OF.

>> YEAH.

I MEAN, YOU KNOW, WE STARTEDLOOKING INTO THIS.

I HAD COVERED THIS STORY FOR 35YEARS, MY ENTIRE CAREER, AND I

COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THEPROBLEM KEPT GETTING WORSE, AND

NOBODY WAS REALLY KIND OFROLLING UP THEIR SLEEVES AND

DIGGING INTO THE ROOT CAUSES OFTHE EPIDEMIC, BUT SOME OF THE

STATISTICS WE DISCOVERED AREREALLY DISTURBING, AS YOU SAID,

JON, STAGGERING.

IN 1980 THERE WERE ZERO CASES OFTYPE 2 DIABETES AMONG

ADOLESCENTS.

IN 2010, ALMOST 58,000 CASES OFTYPE 2 DIABETES.

ONE IN THREE PEOPLE BY 2050 ISGONNA HAVE DIABETES.

>> Jon: AND 90% ARE GOING TO BEOBESE BY 2050?

>> IN TWO DECADES, 95% OFAMERICANS WILL BE OVERWEIGHT OR

OBESE. AND THIS I THINK IS THESADDEST STATISTIC OF ALL THAT

WE HEARD IN THAT CLIP-- THISGENERATION OF CHILDREN IS THE

FIRST THAT WILL LIVE SHORTERLIFESPANS THAN THEIR PARENTS.

AND IT'S REALLY JUST SUCH ASERIOUS PROBLEM.

>> Jon: BUT, WHEN YOU TALKABOUT SUGAR, IT CAUSES DIABETES

OR TYPE 2 DIABETES OR CANCER ORHEART DISEASE--

>> METABOLIC DISORDERS.

>> Jon: METABOLIC DISORDERS. ONTHE FLIP SIDE, IT IS DELICIOUS.

>> THAT'S TRUE.

>> AND I THINK IT DOES MAKEEVERYTHING BETTER.

>> BECAUSE WE'RE PROGRAMMED--WE'RE PROGRAMMED TO CRAVE IT

FROM A VERY EARLY--VERY EARLY AGE, AND THE

MARKETING AND ALL THE IMAGES.

>> Jon: RIGHT. BUT, HERE'S WHATI DON'T GET.

YOU, YOU, WE'RE AROUND THE SAMEAGE.

I GREW UP IN THE 60, EARLY70s.

THAT IS THE AGE I WAS.

I ATE CRAP, RING DINGS, YODELS,MALOMARS. LIKE, IT WASN'T LIKE

BEFORE 1980s WE LIVED IN ANAGRARIAN UTOPIA WHERE, YOU

KNOW, MA WOULD COME AND WE'D ALLHAVE KALE PANCAKES. I ATE THE

SALISBURY STEAK HUNGRY MANDINNER WITH THE PEACH COBBLER

THAT CLEARLY HAD NO PEACH AND NOCOBBLER. LIKE, WHAT --

>> THAT'S TRUE.

BUT I BET THE PORTION SIZE BYTHE WAY WAS MUCH SMALLER.

>> Jon: IS THAT THEDIFFERENCE?

>> WELL, THERE ARE MANY THINGSTHAT HAVE HAPPENED.

IN THE LATE 70s THE LOW-FATCRAZE ENTERED THE PICTURE

BECAUSE THE McGOVERN REPORTSAID THAT AMERICANS NEED TO

REDUCE SATURATED FAT AND SUGARIN THEIR DIETS. WELL, THE MILK,

EGG, DAIRY INDUSTRY THEY ALLFREAKED OUT AND SAID OH NO WE

NEED TO MAKE SURE PEOPLECONTINUE TO BUY OUR PRODUCT, SO

GUESS WHAT? WE'LL MAKE THEM LOWFAT. BUT WHEN YOU MAKE THINGS

LOW FAT THEY TASTE SO LOUSY YOUHAVE TO PUMP IN THE SUGAR. SO,

AMERICANS BETWEEN 1977, AND2000, DOUBLED THEIR SUGAR INTAKE

IN JUST THAT PERIOD OF TIME.

SO I THINK OF 600,000 PRODUCTSIN THE GROCERY STORE, 80% OF

THOSE HAVE ADDED SUGAR.

>> Jon: ADDED SUGAR.

>> IT IS EVERYWHERE.

>> Jon: THE WORST THING ISAW-- OTHER THAN THE HUMAN PAIN

OF THESE KIDS-->> OH, YEAH.

>> Jon: WHICH IS HEARTBREAKING.

>> ISN'T IT AMAZING BY THE WAYTHAT THEY PARTICIPATED IN THIS?

I MEAN, THEY DESERVE SO MUCHCREDIT.

>> Jon: YES. IT WAS INCREDIBLYCOURAGEOUS AND THE STRUGGLE IS

ENORMOUS.

>> HEARTBREAKING.

>> Jon: WHEN THEY PUT THEIRHEARTS ON THEIR SLEEVES LIKE

THAT, IT IS JUSTHEARTBREAKING. BUT,

BEYOND THAT IS THE CORRUPTIONAT THE HIGHEST LEVELS.

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION,WHEN THEY'RE GOING TO RELEASE A

REPORT-- AND YOU HAVE IT IN THEFILM, THAT SAYS THE ISSUES ABOUT

SUGAR --

>> RIGHT, SUGAR SHOULD 10%, NOMORE THAN 10% OF THE DIET.

>> Jon: NO MORE THAN 10% OF THEDIET.

WE SEND OVER TOMMYTHOMPSON TO TELL THEM IF YOU PUT

THAT IN THERE, WE WILL NOT GIVEYOU THE MONEY--

>> THE $400 MILLION.

>> Jon: THE $450 MILLION WEWERE GOING TO GIVE YOU AND THEY

TAKE IT OUT. WE BASICALLY BRIBETHE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION.

>> WELL, AS ROBERT LUSTIG SAID,WE PRETTY MUCH EXTORT THEM INTO

KEEPING THAT QUIET.

AND THE SUGAR LOBBY SAYSACTUALLY IT SHOULD BE 25% OF

YOUR DIET, WHICH IS TWO AND AHALF TIMES --

>> Jon: THE QUESTION OF THESUGAR LOBBY GUY WAS TREMENDOUS

WHEN YOU ASKED HIM IS SUGAR TIEDTO THESE THINGS-- IT REMIND YOU

OF THAT TOBACCO STORY. AND HE'SUNABLE TO ANSWER IT.

>> WELL, A LOT OF THE STUDIESARE FINANCED, UNFORTUNATELY, BY,

YOU KNOW, BIG FOOD COMPANIES,SO, NEEDLESS TO SAY,

THEY'RE NOT EXACTLY PURE INTHIER, IN THEIR EXECUTION.

>> BUT WHAT IS, IS THE ANSWERPURELY ABOUT GOING BACK TO A

TIME WHEN WE DON'T ADD SUGAR?

BECAUSE WE DID EAT LIKE CRAP.

>> WELL, YOU KNOW, I THINK-- IMEAN, I THINK THERE'S A WHOLE

CONFLUENCE OF THINGS. I THINKYOU REALLY,

YES, OF COURSE, WE DID EAT SOMETHINGS THAT WEREN'T VERY

HEALTHY, BUT, YOU KNOW, ALL ICAN SAY IS THE THE NUMBERS

DON'T LIE, JON. RIGHT? WHEN YOUHEAR THE NUMBERS.

>> Jon: NO, NO, SOMETHING'SHAPPENING.

>> SO ALL WE CAN DO IS POINT TOSOME OF THE PROBLEMS AND I THINK

YOU SHOULD PROBABLY REDUCE YOURINTAKE OF PROCESSED FOODS,

PEOPLE SHOULD EAT WHOLE FOODS--PEOPLE DON'T REALLY COOKANYMORE.

>>Jon: BUT EVERYONE KNOWS THISDON'T THEY?

>> WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP-- IDON'T KNOW.

IF THEY KNOW IT, THEY DON'T DOIT. AND I THINK THEY --

>> Jon: RIGHT. BUT ISN'T ITBECAUSE IT'S SO MUCH CHEAPER?

YOU KNOW, IF I'M OUT THERE AND IGO OUT THERE AND I CAN GO TO

MCDONALDS AND GET --

>> NO, WE SHOW IN THE FILM, ASYOU SEE, WE SHOW A MEAL FROM A

FAST FOOD RESTAURANT, ANDA CHICKEN AND VEGETABLES

COOKED AT HOME ANDTHAT'S REALLY --

>> Jon: RIGHT. BUT THEY MADE IT.AND THEY HAVE A DRIVE-THROUGH.

>> THAT'S TRUE, AND THECONVENIENCE IS THE THING, BUT I

THINK WE ALL HAVE TO FIGURE OUTWHERE ARE OUR PRIORITIES?

WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO?

AND WE HAVE TO MAKE THISSOMETHING WE CARE ABOUT BECAUSE

WE HAVE TO DO IT FOR OUR KIDS,REALLY.

BECAUSE OTHERWISE, YOU KNOW, ASWE SAID, WE'RE KILLING PEOPLE.

>> Jon: I KNOW.

IT'S JUST SO OFTEN THEPOLITICIANS ALWAYS SAY, "WE MUST

DO IT FOR OUR KIDS."

AND IT'S CLEAR TO ME, AT LEAST,THAT WE HATE OUR KIDS.

( LAUGHTER )BECAUSE WE'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT

THIS FOR, LIKE, 200 YEARS.

AND WE'RE LIKE, YEAH YEAHYEAH, OUR KIDS.

WE NEVER,KNOW WHAT I MEAN?

IT REALLY FEELS LIKE A GIANTMOUNTAIN TO CLIMB.

>> WELL, YOU KNOW, I THINK EVENSMALL STEPS, LIKE LOOKING AT

LABELS AND UNDERSTANDING--YOU KNOW, YOU NEED A

CALCULATOR WHEN YOU GO TO THEGROCERY STORE.

FOUR GRAMS OF SUGAR EQUALS ONETEASPOON, RIGHT? AND,

YOU WOULD BE SHOCKED IF YOU ADDUP THE ADDED SUGAR IN A LOT OF

PRODUCTS.

SO, I SHOP A LOT DIFFERENTLY.

I USED TO ALWAYS BUY LOW-FATSTUFF.

I DON'T NOW.

I LOOK AT THE SUGAR CONTENT.

AND I THINK EVEN IF PEOPLE WEREJUST MORE MINDFUL ABOUT WHAT

THEY'RE BUYING -->> Jon: YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.

>> WHAT THEY'RE PURCHASING.

Jon: I THINK IT ALSO WORKS ASPRESSURE ON A LARGER LEVEL

POLITICALLY. >> I HOPE SO.

>> WHEN YOU DO SOMETHINGS LIKETHIS, IT DOES SORT OF WAKE

PEOPLE UP.

>> THE GROCERY MANAGERS OFAMERICA JUST INVITED ME TO

THEIR ANNUAL LEADERSHIP FORUM.

( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE ).

>> Jon: CAN I SAY THIS?

I HAVE THREE WORDS FOR YOU,YOUNG LADY?

>> BE CAREFUL? PLEASE.

>> Jon: TWO.

>> I ADDED PLEASE.

>> Jon: PLESE. I WAS GOING TOGO WITH PAPER OR PLASTIC, BUT I

DON'T KNOW.

"FED UP" IS IN THEATERSNATIONWIDE ON FRIDAY.

ENJOY IT WITH SOME REESESPIECES AND SOME POPCORN.

>> NO. C'MON!

>> Jon: NO? THAT'S WRONG? BUTYOU'RE GOING TO BE AT THE

MOVIES. ( CHEERS AND APPLAUSE )
