[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]>> Jon: WELCOME BACK.

MY GUEST TONIGHT HAS ANEW FILM COMING OUT

CALLED "HER."

>> WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOSTABOUT SAMANTHA?

>> OH, GOD, SHE'S SOMANY THINGS.

I LOVE MOST ABOUT HERSHE ISN'T JUST ONE

THING, SO MUCH LARGERTHAN THAT.

>> THANKS THEODORE.

>> SEE SAMANTHA, HE'SSO MUCH MORE EVOLVED

THAN I AM.

>> YOU KNOW WHAT ISINTERESTING?

I USED TO BE SO WORRIEDABOUT NOT HAVING A

BODY BUT I TRULY LOVEIT.

I'M GROWING IN A WAY ICOULDN'T IF I HAD A

PHYSICAL FORM.

I'M NOT LIMITED.

I CAN BE ANYWHERE ANDEVERYWHERE

SIMULTANEOUSLY.

I'M NOT TETHERED TO TIMEAND SPACE IN A WAY THAT

I WOULD BE IF I WASSTUCK IN A BODY THAT IS

INEVITABLY GOING TO DIE.

>> Jon: I'VE BEEN ONTHOSE DATES.

PLEASE WELCOME SCARLETTJOHANSSON.

[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]NICE TO SEE YOU.

>> GOOD TO SEE YOU.

>> Jon: THANK YOU FORBEING HERE.

>> THANK YOU FOR HAVINGME.

>> Jon: I REALLY,REALLY, REALLY LOVE THIS

MOVIE.

IT'S A RARE CREATION.

YOU AND JOAQUIN ANDSPIKE, YOU PUT TOGETHER

REALLY A BEAUTIFULPROJECT.

>> THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT, YOUKNOW, I CAME IN THE POST

PRODUCTION PART OF IT.

SO I REALLY DIDN'T GETTO SEE ANY OF THE

FILMING.

I WASN'T REALLY A PARTOF THAT BUT I THINK IN

SOME WAYS IT SORT OFWORKED FOR ME, YOU KNOW,

AS A -- CREATIVELYBECAUSE I HAD SUCH AN

INTIMATE EXPERIENCEWORKING WITH JOAQUIN AND

SPIKE OUTSIDE OF THATAND IT CREATED THE

RIGHT ENVIRONMENT FORTHAT RELATIONSHIP TO

GROW.

>> Jon: HE FALLS INLOVE WITH HIS OPERATING

SYSTEM.

YOU PLAY THE OPERATINGSYSTEM.

WE NEVER SEE YOUPHYSICALLY.

>> IT'S SORT OF LIKESIRI BUT AN ADVANCED

TYPE OF SIRI.

NO OFFENSE TO SIRI.

>> Jon: NO.

>> OF COURSE.

SHE'S GROWING, EXCITEDABOUT LIFE BUT A BABE

WHEN WE FIRST MEET HERAND SHE EVOLVES INTO

A -- SHE'S SORT OFTRANSCENDS TIME AND

SPACE AND BECOMES A WHOLE KIND OF...

>> Jon: IF YOU AREGOING OUT WITH A GIRL

WHO TRANSCENDS TIME ANDSPACE LIKE THAT AND YOU

ARE A GUY WHO JUST WANTSTO WATCH A MOVIE, MAYBE

A GAME, IT'S HARD --THERE'S THAT POINT WHERE

YOU FEEL LIKE HE IS ATSUCH A DISADVANTAGE.

YOU THINK ORIGINALLY OH,THIS SHE DOESN'T HAVE A

BODY BUT HE'S AT ADISADVANTAGE.

>> THERE'S A LOT OFADVANTAGES TO NOT HAVING

A BODY ACTUALLY.

>> Jon: I'M VERYFAMILIAR WITH THAT.

[ LAUGHTER ]I GUESS IT REALLY

DEPENDS ON THE BODY THATYOU HAVE.

[ LAUGHTER ]AND I THINK, PERHAPS,

CAN SPEAK TO IT PERHAPSBETTER THAN YOU CAN.

[ LAUGHTER ]>> WELL, YOU KNOW, WE

ALL HAVE THE THINGS WE'DLIKE TO CHANGE ABOUT

OURSELVES.

>> Jon: I'M FALLINGAPART

JOHANSSON.

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAWHAT IT'S LIKE LIVING IN

THIS BAG OF BONES?

[LAUGHTER]HAS IT CHANGE THE

WAY YOU VIEW -- I FOUNDMYSELF AFTER WATCHING

THE MOVIE, I FOUNDMYSELF ODDLY SELF

CONSCIOUS AROUND MYCOMPUTER.

[ LAUGHTER ]IN A WAY THAT I --

>> LIKE YOU THOUGHT ITWAS WINKING AT YOU

SOMETIMES OR WHAT?

>> Jon: IN A WAY THATIT UNDERSTOOD THINGS

ABOUT ME AT A LEVEL NOTTHROUGH INTERACTION OR

DIALOG BUT JUST THROUGHWHAT I DO AND THE SEARCH

AND WORK ON AND IT KNOWSME IN A WAY THAT MADE ME

UPSET.

>> DON'T THINK ABOUTTHAT TOO MUCH.

>> Jon: I WON'T!

[LAUGHTER]DO YOU THINK THIS

MOVIE PROTECHNOLOGY?

IS IT -- HAS IT CHANGEDTHE WAY YOU VIEW IT IN

ANYWAY?

>> IT'S HARD TO SAYBECAUSE

MYPERSPECTIVE ON IT IS SO

SKEWED.

DOING THE FILM --WORKING WITH SPIKE AND

DEVELOPING THE CHARACTERIN THE STORY WAS A KIND

OF CATHARSIS FORBOTH OF US.

IT WORKS THROUGH THEAWKWARD PARTS OF A

RELATIONSHIP ANDHEARTBREAKING PARTS,

WHEN TWO PEOPLE COMETOGETHER AND GO IN

DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS ANDYOU REALIZE IT'S

HAPPENING.

FOR ME IT'S NOT ABOUTTHE TECHNOLOGY ASPECT OF

IT, SO TO SPEAK.

IT FEELS LIKE A POSTMODERN LOVE STORY AND

THAT IS WHAT I TOOK AWAYFROM IT WHEN I SAW IT.

YOU KNOW, OF COURSE,THINK -- SPIKE TOLD ME

CHARLIE KAUFFMAN SAW ITAND THOUGHT IT WAS THE

MOST TERRIFYING THING HEHAD EVER SEEN IN HIS

LIFE.

>> Jon: IT ISTERRIFYING.

>> THERE'S ASPECTS WHERESOMEBODY COULD SEE THAT.

FOR ME IT'S ENDLESSLYCHARMING.

>> Jon: IT ISENDLESSLY CHARMING BUT

YOU ARE DOING IT IN ABOOTH.

IT'S LIKE BEING IN AN ANIMATEDMOVIE.

IT'S SOPHISTICATED

-- ITMIGHT HAVE BEEN LIKE

BEING IN AN INCREDIBLYINAPPROPRIATE PIXAR MOVIE.

WHEN ONE OF CARS IS -->> I THINK YOU ARE

REFERRING TO THE SCENETHAT TAKES PLACE IN --

WE HAVE SEX BASICALLY.

>> Jon: THEY HAVE SEX.

IT'S QUITE BEAUTIFUL.

[ LAUGHTER ]AND I WENT TO MY PHONE

AND I SAID TO SIRI.

I GO, WHY CAN'T WE HAVETHAT KIND OF

RELATIONSHIP?

BUT SHE DOESN'T THINK OFME THAT WAY.

>> SHE WON'T.

YEAH, SHE DOESN'T THINK,I GUESS.

>> Jon: ARE YOU IN THEROOM -- IS THERE

ANYTHING YOU ARE WORKINGON?

>> I WORKED ON IT IN SOMANY DIFFERENT WAYS

BECAUSE SPIKE IS NOTHINGIF NOT THOROUGH.

WE DID THE FILM AT LEAST25 OR 30 TIMES OVER MANY

MONTHS AND MANYLOCATIONS WITH JOAQUIN WITH

SPIKE, WITH THERECORDING, SOMETIMES

JUST MYSELF.

ALL DIFFERENT WAYS.

YOU HAVE TO SEE THEFILM.

>> Jon: YOU HAVE TOSEE IT.

WHAT AN -- HE'S ANINCREDIBLE FILMMAKER.

THE BIGGEST COMMENT ITHINK IS THIS IS STAYING

WITH ME.

IT'S STAYING WITH METHAT I THINK IS VERY

UPSETTING.

[ LAUGHTER ]IT'S STAYING WITH ME IN

A BEAUTIFUL WAY.

IT'S WONDERFUL.

>> THANK YOU.

>> Jon: "HER" IS INTHE THEATERS RIGHT NOW. SCARLETT

JOHANSSON.
